What to Expect in Your Success Session at Urban Athlete

Walking into a gym for the first time feels intimidating for most people. That's not a flaw in you, it's just the reality of doing something new. Every gym is different, for better or worse, and no two gym experiences are the same. We've been coaching in the Philadelphia community for over 20 years, and we've welcomed a lot of people through our doors who felt exactly the way you might be feeling right now.

This post is here to walk you through what your first visit to Urban Athlete actually looks like, to ease your curiosity.

Why We Start With a One-on-One Session

Whether you're beginning strength training for the first time or coming back to it after a break, we don't just hand you a schedule and point you toward the floor. Your first visit is a one-on-one success session with a coach, and there's no charge for it. It's intentionally set up that way.

We know that every gym is different, and so is every person who walks into one. Before you commit to training with us, we want to make sure you feel comfortable in our space and confident that the program you choose is the right fit. That matters to us because your success here matters to us. It's that simple.

What Happens During the Session

Your success session has three parts, and you can expect to spend about 45 to 60 minutes with us.

The conversation. You and the coach you're meeting with sit down and talk. This is where we learn about your goals, your previous exercise history, and any injuries or health conditions that might need to be accounted for during your workouts. This isn't a questionnaire we rush through, it's a real conversation. Getting to know what you're looking for is how we guide you toward the best training option at Urban Athlete, whether that's personal training, group training, IsoPhit, or a combination.

The movement. After the conversation, you and your coach go through a brief mobility-based warm-up followed by a shortened version of a workout you're likely to experience here. This gives your coach the chance to teach you some of our basic movement patterns and determine if any modifications might need to be made in your first few days or weeks. If you're new to strength training, this is where you start to see that it's approachable, not just something for people who already know what they're doing.

The honest recommendation. We'll share our thoughts on whether personal training, group training, or IsoPhit is the best fit for you, and we'll tell you why. This isn't a sales pitch. It's a recommendation based on what we just learned about you and what we've seen in the movement portion. Over two decades of coaching has taught us that putting someone in the right program from the start is worth more than filling a spot.

You Might Get to See a Session in Action

Depending on the time of your success session, you may be able to observe part of one of our training programs while you're here. It's a good way to get a feel for how sessions are run in real time; the energy, the coaching style, the structure. You might even meet a few members of the UA community while you're at it.

What to Wear and Bring

Come dressed in comfortable clothing you would typically work out in and athletic shoes you can move in. If you'd rather change when you get here, that's fine too, just bring your workout clothes with you. A water bottle is something you should always bring; we have a filtered water system for easy refills. We also provide complimentary towels to use while you're here, as well as exercise mats. You're also welcome to bring your own if you prefer. You don't need to bring any equipment. Just yourself!

What Happens After Your Success Session

We discuss your training options and cost with you during the success session itself, so everything is transparent before you leave. If you're ready to go, you can start training as early as the next day. If you'd rather take some time to think it over, there's no pressure to commit the day of. We'd rather you feel sure about the decision than rushed into it.

A Note on Scheduling

Most success sessions are scheduled mid to late morning during the week. We know that doesn't fit every work schedule, and we'll do our best to find a time that works for you. If you have a work-from-home day or an upcoming day off during the week, that's often a good option, just let us know and we'll work with you.

This Is Where It Starts

If you've been searching "gyms near me" hoping to find something that feels more personal than a big-box facility, somewhere you're actually coached, not just given access to equipment, that's what we've built here. Urban Athlete has been part of this community for a long time because we take the time to do it right, starting with your very first visit.

Whether you're beginning strength training, coming back after years away, or looking for a change in how you train, the success session is designed to meet you where you are. No assumptions. No pressure. Just a starting point that makes sense for you.
